Police have launched an investigation into President Yun Suk-yol's treason charges after declaring martial law this week.

The investigation was assigned to the Security Investigation Team of the National Investigation Department of the National Police Agency after two complaints were filed.

One complaint was filed by the minor opposition party Restore Korea, and the other by a group of 59 activists. The complaints accuse not only Yoon, but also former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, Army Chief of Staff General Park Ahn-soo, and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min of treason and other similar charges for their roles in the declaration and subsequent lifting of martial law on Tuesday.

On Thursday, prosecutors imposed a travel ban on former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun pending an investigation into treason charges

Yong declared martial law on Tuesday night at Kim's suggestion amid an escalating political stalemate with the opposition-controlled National Assembly. He revoked the order six hours after the Assembly voted to end it.

To recap

Earlier, UNN reported that South Korean President Yun Seok-yeol announced this week the introduction of martial law in the country: to “destroy pro-North Korean forces and maintain constitutional order”. In Seoul, clashes broke out between citizens and the military, who blocked the parliament building. The leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-man, emphasized that martial law is unconstitutional and contrary to the interests of society.

Opposition parties in South Korea have initiated the impeachment of President Yun Seok-yol due to the introduction of martial law. The impeachment vote is scheduled for December 6-7, with two-thirds of the National Assembly's votes required for approval.
