At the age of 26, Swiss snowboarder Sophie Hediger, who specialized in cross-country, died. The woman died in an avalanche on Christmas Eve, in the Swiss resort of Arosa. According to the Swiss Ski Federation, Hediger was carried away by an avalanche.

Sophie Hediger, who grew up in Horgen (a commune in Switzerland, a district center located in the canton of Zurich), often visited Arosa.

It was here that “her life was cut short tragically, brutally and prematurely while she was freeriding, a passion she loved very much,” the Swiss Ski Association emphasizes.

In the 2023/24 season, Sophie Hediger climbed to her first two World Cup podiums. During the dress rehearsal for the World Championships in St. Moritz, she took second place. Winning a medal at her home World Cup, which will take place in Engadine in March 2025, was one of her sporting dreams. She has already realized another by participating in the 2022 Olympic Games in China.

“For the Swiss-Ski family, the tragic death of Sophie Hediger has cast a dark shadow over Christmas. We are extremely saddened. We will cherish Sophie's memory,” said Walter Reusser, CEO of Sport Swiss-Ski.
