On Friday, a landslide occurred on the outskirts of Chongqing in southwestern China, killing at least eight people, leaving 34 missing, burying residential buildings, and evacuating over 1,100 people. This was reported by local authorities and state media, as conveyed by UNN citing AP.

The landslide occurred around 9:08 a.m. in Pengshui County on the outskirts of Chongqing, when huge volumes of rock and earth washed down the slope, burying more than 10 residential buildings, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Ten people were rescued from the rubble, including two who were seriously injured, said Pengshui County Mayor Ren Xujiang.

Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed authorities to determine the cause of the disaster, state media reported.

Within a 1-kilometer radius of the landslide, water, electricity, and gas supplies were cut off to prevent further disruptions. More than 800 rescuers were at the scene, according to a statement from local authorities.

CCTV footage shows part of a mountain slope collapsing onto a residential area. Several buildings are located near the site of the collapse, and rescue teams are combing through the rubble. According to the TV channel, rescue operations are hampered by unstable terrain and the risk of a secondary landslide.

Footage shared on social media shows rescuers in orange clothing using excavators to clear the rubble. At one point, a group of rescuers pulled a survivor from under the debris.

Large stone slabs slid next to houses into a body of water below. Two buildings, approximately five and fifteen stories high, were damaged but are still standing.

The landslide, triggered by rains, occurred near a section of the Wujiang River, which flows through karst mountains dotted with small towns and terraces.

Authorities said they sent more than 8,000 essential items to Chongqing for those affected by the disaster, including tents, folding beds, and family emergency kits.
