Musk, wrote on the X platform that the AfD is the only party capable of “saving Germany.” This caused a sharp outcry from politicians across the spectrum.
Alice Weidel, the AfD chancellor candidate, enthusiastically welcomed Musk's support.
She answered: “Yes! You are absolutely right, @elonmusk! Please watch my interview about President Trump, Merkel's socialist legacy, the destructive Soviet European Union, and Germany's economic decline!”
However, leading German politicians expressed outrage.
Dennis Radtke, a member of the European Parliament from the center-right CDU party, called Musk's comments “irritating and unacceptable,” accusing the billionaire of interfering in the German elections.
According to German media, Radtke also called Musk a “threat to democracy” and criticized X as a platform for spreading disinformation.
Alex Schaefer of the center-left SPD party condemned Musk's remarks as “completely unacceptable,” emphasizing that it is important to strongly oppose foreign interference.
Meanwhile, former Finance Minister Christian Lindner of the FDP admitted that Musk had influenced some of his policies in the past, but warned him against supporting the AfD. “The AfD is against freedom, business and democracy - it is a far-right extremist party,” Lindner tweeted.
Later, Musk emphasized his position, saying that the AGW is a “common sense policy” and rejected the “far-right label.
