"On Friday, a large fire almost completely destroyed a luxury resort in the Dominican Republic, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists," the publication writes.
It is noted that an Italian tourist died as a result of the fire, and several other tourists required medical assistance.
The resort hotel Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham is located in Bayahibe, a popular destination for American and international tourists on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic.
About 1,690 tourists had to be evacuated from the resort to other hotels and neighboring residential complexes. The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the country's Emergency Operations Center stated that the "fire likely spread rapidly" due to wind and because part of the resort's roof was made of thatch.
Another neighboring resort, Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, was not affected by the fire and operated as usual.
