The project will be the first major update of euro banknotes since the introduction of the common European currency over 20 years ago. The current series features images of fictional bridges and gates that do not depict real architectural landmarks.

New banknotes are being developed in parallel with the digital euro

Euro banknotes are more than just a means of payment; they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe

– said Christine Lagarde.

The ECB is working on updating paper banknotes simultaneously with preparations for the launch of the digital euro. Earlier this month, the regulator selected 36 payment service providers that will participate in a 12-month pilot project starting in the second half of 2027.

The process of updating the banknote design has been ongoing since 2021 and also includes the modernization of their security features. The ECB has not yet announced the exact timeline for issuing the new banknotes, noting that after the design is approved, it will undergo refinement, testing, and only then enter circulation.
