Air conditioning at Foxtrot: self-cleaning, HEPA, and ionization — how filtration systems work

The first start-up of an air conditioner after a break is often accompanied by a musty smell in the first few minutes. This is physics: condensate forms on the heat exchanger plates and remains on the fins for several hours after switching off. A dark and humid environment plus settled dust are conditions for bacteria and mold spores, which the fan then blows into the room.
This physics is addressed by heat exchanger self-cleaning, while filtration works in parallel — from coarse dust to submicron PM 2.5. Modern models combine both systems. Let's break down the levels of self-cleaning and filters, and how to choose an air conditioner at Foxtrot for scenarios involving allergy sufferers, families with pets, studio kitchens, and children's rooms.
Four levels of self-cleaning
There are four levels of self-cleaning in increasing order of efficiency — from simple moisture drying to heat exchanger sterilization:
- Level 1 — drying mode (X-FAN). The fan runs for 5–15 minutes after switching off and dries out the moisture. Available in Gree, Cooper&Hunter, Tosot.
- Level 2 — standard self-cleaning. Active condensate washes dust into the drain within 10–20 minutes.
- Level 3 — Self-Clean with freezing. The compressor lowers the temperature to frost, ice crystals push out dust and bacteria, and thawing washes them into the drain. Haier additionally features a hydrophilic coating on the fins (+20% to water drainage) and a nano-coating with silver ions Ag+ (up to 99.9% of bacteria according to the manufacturer).
- Level 4 — Steri-Clean 56°C. Heating the heat exchanger for 30 minutes. Haier tests record 99.5–99.998% virus inactivation. In the Haier Revive series — a minimum of 18 dB. The Haier Flexis series adds a UVC lamp (92.78% disinfection) and 16 dB — the quietest figure in the lineup.
The first two levels prevent the emergence of a micro-environment, while the third and fourth eliminate what is already present.
Filtration for four scenarios
According to US EPA data, a person spends about 90% of their time indoors, and the key particles are PM 2.5 and PM 10. Classic HEPA filters are almost never installed in household split systems due to high flow resistance. Instead, Haier iFD, Samsung Zeolite Coating in WindFree, and Panasonic nanoe™ X are used.
The set depends on the purpose of the room and who lives in it:
- allergy sufferer — Samsung models with an Anti-Allergy filter or the Panasonic Etherea series with nanoe™ X Mark 3 (48 trillion hydroxyl radicals per second, lifespan up to 600 seconds);
- pets — Haier Revive series — antibacterial filter and Self-Clean at 56°C;
- studio kitchen — Cooper&Hunter VITAL series with an optional Anti-smell carbon cartridge;
- children's room or bedroom — Haier Flexis series — 16 dB, UVC, 56°C, and Self-Clean simultaneously.
Why the filter set is a matter of consultation
Technologies from different product cards look equally convincing, and it's easy to make a mistake in the choice: for an allergy sufferer, the density of anti-allergenic fibers is important; in a children's room at night — minimal noise; in a kitchen — a carbon layer. Foxtrot salespeople undergo regular courses from climate equipment manufacturers. It is enough to describe the room scenario — area, window orientation, presence of allergies, pets, or a child — and together choose two or three relevant models.
The second advantage of Foxtrot is the "FoxFan" program. A split system requires service: drain cleaning, carbon cartridge replacement, freon check. Cashback to the bonus account accumulates with every purchase and covers subsequent expenses — consumables and service work.
Clean air depends on the set of filters and maintenance, and precise selection for the scenario allows you to avoid paying for unnecessary features.
