President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the appearance of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in the center of Kyiv. He stated this during festive events at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on the occasion of the Constitution Day of Ukraine, reports UNN.
Details
He emphasized that the bust of Mazepa, during whose time the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra experienced a period of flourishing, will stand in the same place, and he called the hetman an outstanding Ukrainian statesman, philanthropist, and leader of the Ukrainian Cossack state.
At the same time, a full-fledged monument to the hetman, who is still considered a "traitor" of Peter I in russia, will appear on the site where the monument to the founder of the USSR, Vladimir Lenin, previously stood. It is about Taras Shevchenko Boulevard in the area of Bessarabka.
The scale of this personality deserves a full-fledged monument in the capital of our state. I believe that the ideal place for it already exists. It has been there since December 2013 on Shevchenko Boulevard. I am confident that where Lenin fell, Mazepa will stand firmly
