The Court found that Trump's decision to fire Cook is unconstitutional. Thus, she will continue to perform her duties at the Federal Reserve System.
In August 2025, Trump announced his intention to fire Cook, accusing her of alleged mortgage fraud. However, a federal district court in Washington blocked this decision due to insufficient evidence, and later the Supreme Court allowed her to remain in office until the final consideration of the case.
Cook from the very beginning denied all accusations and insisted that the president does not have the legal authority to dismiss members of the Fed's Board of Governors.
Trump threatened retaliation after the court ruling
After the verdict was announced, Lisa Cook stated that the Supreme Court's decision strengthens the independence of the Federal Reserve System from political interference.
At the same time, Donald Trump sharply criticized the court ruling and threatened to take retaliatory measures.

As noted by American media, this is the first case in U.S. history where a president attempted to remove a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, which was established by Congress back in 1913.
