Due to heat over 38°C, the US declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, allowing power plants to exceed environmental standards. Backup generators are permitted until July 3.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency in the energy sector for the country's largest power grid due to a dangerous heatwave that could cause record strain on the energy system. This was reported by Bloomberg, writes UNN.
Details
The US Department of Energy issued an emergency order allowing power plants in the PJM Interconnection area to operate at maximum capacity and temporarily exceed certain environmental standards.
PJM Interconnection supplies electricity to about 67 million people in 13 US states.
Backup generators allowed to be used as a last resort
Bloomberg notes that by a separate order, the Department of Energy also allowed the use of backup generators in the PJM region "as a last resort." Both decisions will be in effect until the end of the day on July 3, New York time.
Earlier, PJM asked federal authorities to introduce emergency measures, warning of a possible record demand for electricity due to forecast temperatures above 38°C.
According to the US National Weather Service, the heatwave will cover the area from Washington to Boston. Excessive heat warnings have been issued in more than two dozen states, and forecasters predict the setting or breaking of hundreds of temperature records.
