Automakers are recalling a record 4.3 million vehicles in China due to the risk of difficulty opening the doors after a crash. Tesla will recall 2.98 million vehicles.

Tesla and eight other automakers have announced the recall of around 4.3 million vehicles in China due to the risk that the doors may be difficult to open in an emergency. This is the largest vehicle recall campaign in China's history, Reuters reports, writes UNN.

Tesla will recall the largest number of vehicles—around 2.98 million Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X cars manufactured in China or imported into the country. The campaign will begin on September 25.
The problem is related to emergency mechanical door handles, which may be difficult to locate or use after a serious accident and an electrical-system failure. This creates a risk for passengers and rescuers during evacuation.
China is tightening requirements for vehicles
In addition to Tesla, Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng, Geely and other manufacturers have announced recalls. Xiaomi will recall around 390,000 vehicles, Leapmotor 371,000, and Xpeng approximately 264,000.

To address the problem, automakers will use software updates, warning stickers and additional markings near the door handles. Tesla, in particular, plans a remote update that will automatically lower the vehicle's windows after a collision.
The scale of the campaign comes amid China's increased scrutiny of vehicle safety. Starting in 2027, the country also plans to ban hidden door handles, which became popular after their widespread use in Tesla vehicles.
