Poland demands annual payments from Germany to victims of Nazi persecution - Spiegel

The Polish government has proposed that Germany pay 10,000 zlotys per year to victims of Nazi persecution. This demand is significantly more modest than Warsaw's previous claims for multi-trillion reparations. This is reported by UNN citing Spiegel.

Details

According to the publication, the Polish side proposes paying each victim 10,000 zlotys annually (about 2,333 euros). German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul previously expressed support for compensation to Polish victims of the Nazi regime, but the issue of funding sources remains unresolved.

It is estimated that about 50,000 victims of Nazi persecution currently live in Poland. As Spiegel notes, implementing such an initiative would cost Germany about 100 million euros in the first year, and approximately 300 million euros in total.

The publication recalls that in 2022, the previous Polish government demanded reparations from Berlin in the amount of 6.22 trillion zlotys (over 1.3 trillion euros), but Germany refused to pay them, citing a lack of legal grounds.
