Los Angeles Fire Recovery Plan for $925 million: What is planned

A $925 million plan to recover from the Los Angeles wildfires has been presented in Southern California. This is reported by Reuters, UNN reports.

Details

On Friday, Southern California Edison (SCE), part of the large energy holding company Edison International, announced the launch of a new plan to restore the devastated areas after the wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January.

A preliminary recovery project has already been submitted to California Governor Gavin Newsom, and its estimated cost ranges from $860 to $925 million.

These fires, which broke out on January 7, claimed dozens of lives and destroyed thousands of homes, becoming one of the biggest disasters in US history. SCE notes that ensuring alternative funding is crucial for the implementation of the recovery plan.

Although the official causes of the fires have not yet been established, a number of lawsuits claim that SCE's power lines and poles in the Altadena area may have been the source of one of the fires - the so-called Eaton Fire. In addition, the company faced lawsuits from Los Angeles County and the City of Pasadena.

SCE said in a statement that investigations into the incidents are ongoing and that the company remains committed to transparency to the public. In turn, the new recovery plan will focus on building underground power lines in the Altadena and Malibu areas, which are located in Los Angeles County.

Recall

Two deadly fires that have engulfed Los Angeles since January 7 have been partially extinguished.

The Eaton Fire, which destroyed 57 square kilometers in eastern Los Angeles, has been 91% contained, while the larger Palisades Fire, which burned 95 square kilometers in the west of the city, is 68% controlled.

Since their inception, these fires have covered an area roughly the size of Washington state, killing 28 people and damaging or destroying nearly 16,000 buildings. According to Cal Fire, at the peak of the situation, about 180,000 people were under evacuation orders.
