Israel officially recognized the Armenian genocide amid tensions with Turkey

The Israeli government voted unanimously to officially recognize the Armenian genocide amid deteriorating relations with Turkey. This happened on Sunday, June 28, reports UNN citing Politico.

Details

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar stated at a government meeting that the Armenian genocide "remains to this day the subject of an institutionalized campaign of denial and minimization, including the manipulative rewriting of history, mainly by the Turkish government."

The Ottoman Empire systematically committed crimes that constitute genocide with the aim of destroying the Armenian people

 - he added.

Context

The Armenian genocide was carried out by the authorities of the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923. It began during the First World War and was carried out through the deliberate and systematic mass extermination and deportation of the Armenian population. During this time, according to historians, over 1.5 million Armenians died.

More than 30 countries around the world have recognized these mass killings as the genocide of the Armenian people. Among them are Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Belgium, the Vatican, Greece, Cyprus, Lithuania, Germany, the Netherlands, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, the United States, Syria, France.

In contrast, Turkey officially does not recognize the mass killings of Armenians as genocide. Ukraine also has not officially recognized the Armenian genocide due to reluctance to spoil relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Reminder

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated readiness to provide a platform for negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia to resume the diplomatic process of settling the war.
