In the USA, more and more Republican electorate is against aid to Ukraine - WSJ

American Republican voters are increasingly speaking out against continued US aid to Ukraine. The results of a new poll demonstrate a deepening split in the views of US citizens on Washington's foreign policy, The Wall Street Journal reports, writes UNN.

In a new poll, 83% of Democrats supported continued financial assistance to Ukraine to protect it from Russia, while 79% of Republicans opposed the initiative.

Details

The split in Americans' position on US aid to Ukraine emerged as early as 2003-2004, when the magazine's polls found that Democrats were increasingly supporting the initiative, while Republicans argued that the US was already doing too much.

Among all voters in the new poll, 49% supported continued aid to Ukraine, while 44% opposed it.

This is not the only issue in foreign policy that has divided respondents into two camps. Republican voters are taking an increasingly isolationist view of America's role in the world, opposing free trade and fulfilling international obligations.

Approximately 81% of Republicans agreed that US allies have not taken enough responsibility for their own defense. Therefore, the US should stop using taxpayers' money to protect them. Instead, 83% of Democrats hold the opposite view, believing that international alliances are a source of strength and should be supported by taxes.

At the same time, most respondents oppose the idea of expanding US territory by seizing foreign lands, which are increasingly expressed in the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Almost 62% of voters indicated that Trump's constant reflections on expanding the US through Greenland and Canada are a bad idea. Only 25% supported the establishment of American control over these two regions. and will strengthen national security and the American economy.

Instead, among Republicans, 51% of respondents called Trump's comments on territorial expansion a good idea. While 28% did not support it.

Overall, the poll results demonstrate an increasingly stark political polarization among the positions of the leaders of both parties, the poll's authors concluded.

Let us remind you

Thousands of Americans took to the streets of Boston, Washington and other cities to express their protest against the radical changes in US policy that Donald Trump is introducing. Organizers expect about 1,200 demonstrations across the country.
