The body of the deceased was found in a burned area near the village of Liti, approximately 15 km northwest of Thessaloniki. More than 100 firefighters, dozens of pieces of special equipment, and at least seven aircraft were involved in extinguishing the fire.
According to the BBC, a woman suffered burns to her hands while trying to put out the flames on her own. The work of rescuers is complicated by strong winds and hot weather, which cause the fire to spread quickly and new hotspots to emerge.
The fire covered a five-kilometer front
As reported, the fire broke out around 2:30 p.m. local time and quickly spread to the adjacent forest. By Tuesday evening, firefighters were battling a wall of flames about 5 km long, which continued to spread.
The causes of the fire have not yet been determined. A high level of danger was declared in the region due to the risk of forest fires caused by dry weather and strong winds.
Residents of Liti were urged to urgently leave their homes. According to Greek broadcaster ERT, the fire damaged several houses and spread towards the neighboring village of Melissochori.
The BBC notes that this is not the first large-scale forest fire in Greece in recent days. Every summer, the country regularly suffers from natural fires due to drought and high temperatures.
