The new tragedy occurred the day after a safety meeting chaired by Chinese Premier Li Qiang. He called for increased inspections at hazardous production sites, a crackdown on violations and falsifications, and strengthened oversight in the mining, transport, and construction industries. The calls came against the backdrop of the country's deadliest mining accident in over a decade, which occurred on May 22 in Shanxi province.
