Climate summit in Dubai comes to an end: participants try to agree on COP28 final statement
Kyiv • UNN
COP28 participants disagreed on the wording of the fossil fuel phase-out in the final statement, as the summit ends on Tuesday and the time frame for agreement is very tight.
The countries participating in the COP28 climate summit in Dubai are trying to agree on a final statement, but cannot reach an agreement on the final wording. This is reported by UNN with reference to Euronews.
Details
It is noted that the participants of the climate summit are arguing about a possible agreement on the gradual abandonment of fossil fuels.
Against the background of this situation, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Simon Steele, called for an end to the tactics of blocking the agreement.
We are here to discuss two questions. First, how high are our ambitions for mitigating climate change, and second, are we prepared to support this transition with the appropriate means to make it happen?

Saudi Arabia and Iraq are known to oppose the inclusion of language in the text of the agreement on the phase-out of coal, oil and gas.
Instead, representatives of the EU want the conference to end with a clear agreement on the phase-out of fossil fuels.
If there are more emissions, the planet will boil over. That is why we are here. We have to prevent it
Addendum
The COP28 climate summit ends on Tuesday, so there is very little time left to adopt an agreement. If the countries participating in the conference agree to phase out fossil fuels or even to stop using oil, coal, and gas, it will be a historic moment.
As a reminder,
Saudi Arabia and some OPEC countries are resisting decisive climate action at COP28, and European ministers are expressing disappointment. The conference is overshadowed by tensions over fossil fuel divestment and concerns about OPEC's undue influence.
