This will be his last participation in this event as head of state. The program of the visit also includes a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte.
President Biden plans to announce new agreements with Peru to combat drug trafficking and infrastructure projects. On Sunday, he will make a historic visit to the Amazon in Manaus, Brazil, before traveling to Rio de Janeiro to attend the G20 summit.
On November 15, Joe Biden will hold a bilateral meeting with Boluarte and a trilateral meeting with Japan's new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol.
The White House has already expressed hope that these meetings will become regular, even after the change of administration to Donald Trump in January. One of the most anticipated will be the meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping. It is scheduled for Saturday, November 16. This will be their third meeting, after talks in San Francisco last year and at the G20 in Bali two years ago. According to White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, the main risk to the United States and the world is a possible disruption of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, which could lead to conflict.
He also emphasized that Donald Trump's administration, which will take office on January 20, will face challenges related to China's aggressive actions in the South China Sea and the need to contain Chinese technology that could pose a threat to US security. Biden's meeting with Xi will be an opportunity to assess progress in the relationship and maintain stability during the transition, Sullivan said. The Chinese president arrived in Lima four hours before Biden and has already held talks with Boluarte, after which the two leaders took part in the virtual opening of the Changkai port, built with Chinese capital.
