Today, on March 18, various events are taking place in many countries around the world on the occasion of Recycling Day, UNN reports.

The natural resources of our planet are gradually diminishing, and therefore the issue of recycling various types of waste is becoming more and more important every year.

It is believed that the first recycling company in America was organized in 1690 by William Rittenhouse, a factory that produced paper from cotton and linen rags.

In 1813, in Great Britain, Benjamin Lowe organized the production of woolen yarn from old woolen clothes.

The first recycling company was established in New York City in 1897. This allowed waste to be sorted into different categories so that materials such as metal, fabric, or paper could be reused. In 1886, the United States began mass production of aluminum cans, which quickly led to the emergence of recycling plants. The first such plant opened in Chicago in 1904.

In 1983, Canada first introduced a new system for collecting and recycling household waste - the Blue box. The principle is that people put paper waste, glass, metal, aluminum, and most plastics into one bin. This system is still used successfully  in many countries.

In 1991, Switzerland started recycling electronics for the first time.

Economists estimate that the annual contribution of the recycling industry to global GDP over the next 10 years is projected at $400 billion.

Also today, you can join the Day of Awkward Moments, which was launched in the United States and has become popular in many countries around the world.

According to one survey, the top 5 most embarrassing moments are as follows: being approached during an intimate act - 41%, farting in a public place - 19%, the toilet door on the train opening while you are in the toilet - 16%, tripping or falling in a public place - 14%, complimenting a woman on her pregnancy only to find out that she is not pregnant - 13%.

The purpose of today's event is to show people that they should not be afraid of awkward moments, not to worry if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. It should be perceived easily and with humor.

According to the church calendar, today is the Day of Remembrance of St. Cyril, Archbishop of Jerusalem, who lived in the fourth century.

After reaching the age of majority, Cyril took monastic vows. He was a preacher and theologian. When Cyril became an archbishop, he began a decisive struggle against the Arian heresy. For this, he was deposed and exiled three times.

Kirill, Daniil, Dmitry, and Natalia celebrate their name days on March 18.
