What is celebrated on May 8 in Ukraine and the world

The date of May 8 holds extremely deep historical, humanitarian, and social significance for Ukraine and the entire world. It unites the memory of the greatest tragedies of the last century, support for global medical initiatives, and respect for charity. UNN will tell you about the importance of the events of this day

Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II

Today, Ukraine, along with the entire free world, celebrates the unified Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II of 1939–1945. According to new Ukrainian legislation adopted to synchronize with European tradition, the commemoration of victims and the celebration of victory have been moved to May 8 – the day when the Act of Unconditional Surrender of Nazi Germany historically came into force.

This is a day of quiet sorrow, awareness of the colossal scale of the tragedy, and honoring the millions of lives lost. The symbol of remembrance is the red poppy, and the main leitmotif is the slogan "Never Again." Today, Ukrainians understand the true price of the struggle against totalitarianism particularly deeply, as they are once again forced to defend their independence and right to existence.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day

The holiday was established in honor of the birthday of Henry Dunant – a Swiss humanist, the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross. This is a wonderful opportunity to thank the thousands of medics and volunteers who, risking themselves every day, save lives in combat zones and during large-scale natural disasters.

World Ovarian Cancer Day

A vital initiative designed to raise women's awareness of this insidious oncological disease. Specialists use this day to remind people of the critical need for regular gynecological examinations, as early diagnosis saves lives.

International Thalassaemia Day

The goal of the event is to spread information about this severe hereditary blood disease, support patients and their families, and emphasize the importance of regular and safe blood donation.

World Free Trade Day

A holiday that emphasizes the need for fair and transparent economic relations between states. It calls for the removal of artificial trade barriers to ensure stable economic growth worldwide.

World Donkey Day

An unusual ecological holiday created to honor these incredibly resilient animals. For centuries, donkeys have been indispensable helpers to humans in the most difficult conditions and have earned respectful and humane treatment.

Feast Day of the Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian

According to the Revised Julian church calendar, Orthodox believers remember one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. John is often called the "Apostle of Love," as his teaching is based on the fundamental call for mutual love, light, and spiritual forgiveness.

On May 8, Ivan, Arseniy, Vasyl, Hryhoriy, Makar, Adrian, and Emilia solemnly celebrate their Name Day. Don't forget to congratulate the owners of these beautiful names and wish them strong health and a peaceful sky!
