CBS News reported that a fire broke out aboard the destroyer USS Higgins on Tuesday.
Commander Matthew Comer, a spokesperson for the U.S. 7th Fleet, said in a statement to The Hill that the electrical failure may have caused "sparking or smoke, which ceased once power was secured."
According to him, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer experienced a "technical failure" in its "power distribution system."
The crew on board was not injured, and power to the ship, which was commissioned in 1999, has been restored, Comer added. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
As reported by CNN, citing a U.S. Department of Defense official, the vessel, which carries about 300 sailors and is based in Yokosuka, Japan, lost power and propulsion for several hours.
