The United States plans to invest over $4 billion in modernizing its military and intelligence bases in the United Kingdom. In particular, part of the projects involves the construction of new storage facilities for nuclear weapons. This is reported by The Guardian citing Pentagon documents, as conveyed by UNN.

According to the publication, the total cost of current projects for the design, construction, and modernization of American military facilities in the UK amounts to $4.2 billion. Another $1.3 billion is in the preliminary planning stage.

The documents indicate that in the county of Suffolk, the construction of new bunkers is planned, which will likely be used for storing American nuclear weapons. Modernization of facilities that support units conducting secret operations is also planned.

Separately, the Pentagon intends to upgrade an airbase in Gloucestershire. It was from there this year that American strategic bombers conducted sorties for strikes on Iran by order of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Furthermore, according to the documents, another $163 million is planned to be allocated for the modernization of a secret American intelligence base in the UK.

As The Guardian notes, these plans demonstrate the scale of the American military presence in the UK, where currently over 12,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed at at least 15 military bases and other facilities.

At the same time, the publication writes, discussions are ongoing in the country regarding the advisability of further hosting American military bases. Despite this, British governments for over 70 years have considered them one of the key elements of the defense partnership with the United States.
