Scanners for inspecting railway containers will be installed in Ukraine at the border: what is known

The first scanning systems for inspecting railway cars and containers at the border will appear in Ukraine by the end of 2025. This should speed up customs procedures and detect contraband. This was reported by the State Customs Service, reports UNN.

The first railway scanners will appear in Ukraine by the end of 2025 to monitor trains arriving and departing from the railway stations "Mostyska-2" and "Yahodyn" on the border with Poland. The scanning process will be fully automated with round-the-clock operation and the possibility of two-way scanning

- said the head of the State Customs Service Serhiy Zvyagintsev.

In addition, according to him, the supply of stationary scanning systems for inspecting railway cars at border crossing points with Slovakia and Romania is being agreed with international partners.

Until now, similar projects have not been implemented in our country.

The need for more advanced customs control tools that would ensure the speed of customs procedures and the effectiveness of detecting possible violations is explained by a significant share of exports via railways. According to the customs service, in 2024, the sea accounted for 69% of exports, and 23% of domestic products were exported from Ukraine by rail.

"Modern scanning systems for inspecting railway rolling stock are designed for non-intrusive control. Without additional intervention, they must check the compliance of the contents of the wagons with what is stated in the documents, and effectively identify potential risks associated with smuggling, including tobacco products, narcotic drugs and other prohibited substances," the State Customs Service said in a statement.

Such scanners, as indicated, have the highest standards of detail and image quality and depth of penetration. This will allow determining materials by their structure and recognizing even small elements hidden in the structures of wagons (in the floor or walls).

Scanners are also equipped with special components and software for automated selection of wagons suitable for scanning. These will not include passenger cars and locomotives.
