Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that the main task of the school remains teaching children reading, writing, and mathematics. According to him, research indicates risks to the learning process due to the uncritical use of generative artificial intelligence.
According to the new recommendations, students in grades 8-10 will be able to use AI gradually and under the supervision of teachers who have undergone appropriate training. In high school, the use of such technologies will become part of the curriculum to prepare for further education and work.
Minister of Education Kari Nessa Nordtun emphasized that younger students do not yet have sufficient knowledge and critical thinking skills to effectively use artificial intelligence.
At the same time, exceptions will be made for students who require special digital tools in their learning. The government has also instructed the Directorate for Education to develop new recommendations and strengthen teacher training for working with AI technologies.
