Greece seeks to include Mount Olympus in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed cultural and natural heritage site. The application will be considered during the session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which will take place in Busan from July 20 to 29. This was reported by the Associated Press, writes UNN.

"Snow-covered for a significant part of the year, Mount Olympus — the mythical home of the 12 Olympian gods of Ancient Greece — has captivated the human imagination for millennia. Rising 2,918 meters above sea level from its base, which almost reaches the seacoast, Olympus, according to the beliefs of the ancient Greeks, was the place where, on its highest, rocky, often fog-shrouded peak, stood the throne of Zeus, the king of the gods," the report says.

Now modern Greeks hope that their highest mountain will be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a mixed cultural and natural heritage site. The application is to be considered during the session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which will take place in Busan (South Korea) from Sunday to July 29.

"Olympus is our life. It is the place where we grew up," said the mayor of the municipality of Dion-Olympus, Evangelos Geroliolios, who works in Litochoro, the main town at the foot of the mountain. "It is a place we see every day, but at the same time it is a bearer of myths, history, exceptional biodiversity, extraordinary beauty, and immense cultural value."
