Nancy Metayer Bowen was the first Black woman and the first Haitian-American woman to serve as a city commissioner in Coral Springs, a city of about 134,000 people located approximately 72 km north of Miami.
Police, responding to a call, found Metayer Bowen's body in her home and later arrested her husband, 40-year-old Stephen Bowen. He was reportedly taken to Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale.
Stephen Bowen was listed as the chief operating officer of Men of St. Luke, a religious and fraternal non-profit organization registered in Broward County.
Nancy Bowen's death was also confirmed by her relatives on her Instagram page.
