In early November, near the islands of Porquerolles and Porte-Cros in the Var department of the French Riviera, a fisherman spotted and filmed a four-meter great white shark.
A video uploaded to Facebook shows a shark swimming next to a boat, its fin sticking out of the water. It is accompanied by several fish.

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a species listed as "critically endangered" on the European Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The French Museum of Natural History in Paris and the Fauquier Shark Research Group (GPER) have confirmed that the shark in the video is a great white.
"The individual observed off Port-Cros is indeed a great white shark, I think it is a young individual, not a juvenile, but not yet an adult," Nicolas Ziani, GPER's scientific director, told France 3 Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur.

According to GPER, about forty individuals have been recorded in the Gulf of Lyon since 1600.
Despite its rarity, the great white shark sometimes falls victim to accidental capture, especially because of its attacks on bluefin tuna.
