A white-tailed eagle nest was discovered in the Teteriv forestry. Foresters have suspended operations and are preparing documents to establish a new conservation zone.

A new conservation zone for the Red Book white-tailed eagle to be established in Kyiv region

A new protection zone will be established in the Teteriv forestry in the Kyiv region around a newly discovered nest of the white-tailed eagle. Scientists have confirmed that the rare birds are breeding there, so foresters have already ceased all work in this area. This was reported by the State Enterprise "Forests of Ukraine," according to UNN.

Monitoring of the habitats of Red Book bird species continues in the Kyiv region in cooperation with WWF-Ukraine and scientists from the Kyiv Zoo. Research resumed in early spring with the return of birds from their wintering grounds,

- the report says.

During this time, specialists checked whether the birds had returned to their nests and also searched for new nesting sites.

Currently, there are 12 protection zones in the Teteriv forestry for Red Book birds – the black stork, short-toed snake eagle, lesser spotted eagle, and common crane. The birds returned to all nests this spring.

Recently, Oleksandr Panchuk, a researcher from the "Birds" department of the Kyiv Zoo, returned to the forest to check if the birds had produced offspring.

In one day, we managed to check several nests and have joyful news. New chicks have already been born at the black stork nesting sites. They hatched approximately at the end of May. It is difficult to count how many there are yet, as the bird reliably guards its offspring,

- says the scientist.

An equally important result of this year's monitoring was the confirmation of the nesting of another Red Book bird, the white-tailed eagle, in a new forest area!

In the spring, we recorded a new white-tailed eagle nest. To include it in a protection zone, the bird must settle there and raise new offspring. Nesting has been confirmed, and the chicks are growing. They are already quite large, as they are born earlier than everyone else – in April. Together with WWF-Ukraine, we are preparing the justification for creating a protection zone,

- says Oleksandr Panchuk.

The protection zone around a white-tailed eagle nest involves restricting forestry activities within a radius of 500 meters during the nesting period, and 100 meters permanently. Although it has not been officially established yet, the foresters of the Teteriv forestry are already refraining from work that could disturb the birds during the period of raising their offspring.

After preparing the scientific justification, foresters will complete the necessary documentation and submit it to the Kyiv Regional State Administration, which is to make the decision on creating the new protection zone.

Another important stage of monitoring lies ahead. In three weeks, scientists and conservationists plan to ring the chicks. Ornithologists will place special rings with unique numbers on the legs of the young birds. In the future, this will help track their migration routes and find out where they spend the winter.

Monitoring of Red Book bird habitats in the Teteriv forestry takes place every year during the period of active bird reproduction. The main goal is to preserve indigenous bird species whose numbers are declining, particularly due to the impact of human economic activity. This is a clear example of how foresters and the environmental community can effectively cooperate and speak the same language for the sake of nature conservation.
