The history of Azerbaijan dates back to ancient times, with the first state formations appearing in the late 4th — early 3rd millennia BC. In 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed, becoming the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world. After a period of Soviet rule, Azerbaijan restored its independence in 1991. Azerbaijan has territorial disputes with Armenia over the belonging of Nagorno-Karabakh.
