Volcanic landscape from above: Iceland on fire due to eruption
Kyiv • UNN
The tenth volcanic eruption in three years has occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. Due to the threat of lava flows, the Blue Lagoon resort and 4000 local residents were evacuated.
Another lava eruption from the Sundhnukur volcano has occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. This is the tenth eruption in the last three years. People on an easyJet flight could see the bright lava sparkling in the night sky.
This is reported by UNN with reference to Reuters.
Details
The moment when the easyJet flight flew over the eruption with bright orange lava, was captured on video.
An easyJet crew member on the loudspeaker says:
Ladies and gentlemen, I realize that the volcano must be exciting for you, but please remain in your seats and keep your seat belt securely fastened
The volcano ejected lava and smoke, and due to the formation of a crack about 3 km long, magma broke through the earth's crust.
Evacuation from the Blue Lagoon resort
Due to the threat of lava flows, tourists were completely evacuated from the Blue Lagoon resort, which is located about 20 km from the eruption site. This happened after the authorities warned of the danger associated with volcanic activity.
The resort is currently closed, and customers were offered to change or cancel their reservations through the official website.
A threat to the locals
Despite the fact that the volcanic eruption did not cause significant damage to the infrastructure, the threat to the locals remains. About 4,000 residents of the nearby village of Grindavik were also evacuated due to the threat of lava flows.
Impact on tourists
Iceland remains open to tourists, but it is important to follow the safety recommendations of local authorities. Volcanic activity has not caused significant disruptions to air travel, but you should avoid the immediate vicinity of the volcano.
Note
Iceland, located on the border of tectonic plates, is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, and eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula have become a common occurrence.
Recall
UNN reported that a volcano is erupting again near Reykjavik in Iceland. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the eruption began late Wednesday night.
