The three Americans released by Beijing are Mark Svidankoy Lee and John Leung, whom the US government has called unfairly detained by China. Svidan was facing a death sentence on drug possession charges, while Lee and Leung were in prison on espionage charges.

The plane carrying the three men landed late Wednesday at a military base in San Antonio, Texas.

Biden told reporters Thursday morning that he had spoken to all of them and "I'm very glad they're home.

On Thursday, the Chinese government also announced that the United States had returned four people to China, including at least three Chinese citizens who it said were being held for "political purposes" and a man wanted by Beijing for crimes and who lived in the United States. It did not name the four people.
