The presentation of the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which is expected to outline the Pope's views on preserving humanity in the age of artificial intelligence, will also feature other speakers, including Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández.
Pope Leo, who became the first-ever U.S.-born Pope a year ago, has chosen artificial intelligence as a key issue of his pontificate, frequently mentioning it in his speeches and public appearances.
Olah is a co-founder of Anthropic and leads the organization's work on AI interpretability — the research into how advanced artificial intelligence models work internally. His presence at the Vatican presentation may provide an opportunity to discuss one of the central questions of AI safety: whether the most powerful systems can be understood well enough to be trusted.
The encyclical will be signed by the Pope on May 15, the 135th anniversary of the publication of Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum novarum. The current Pope chose this name in honor of Pope Leo XIII, who led the Church during the first industrial revolution.
