Over the past year, 18 life imprisonment sentences were handed down in Ukraine in cases of crimes against children

Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko reported that over the year, 591 children were removed from dangerous conditions.

From June of last year to June 2026, courts in Ukraine have issued 18 life imprisonment sentences in cases of crimes against children. This was announced by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Ruslan Kravchenko while summing up his one-year tenure in office, reports UNN.
According to the Prosecutor General, from June 2025, 357 criminal proceedings have been registered and are under investigation for crimes against children, of which in 211 cases the charges are supported by heads of regional prosecutor's offices.
During the year, courts issued 81 verdicts in cases of crimes against children, 18 of which were life imprisonment sentences.
Also during the year, at the initiative of the Prosecutor General, the living and upbringing conditions of 66,700 children in 410 institutions and 2,400 families were checked. As a result of the inspection, 591 children were removed from dangerous living conditions. In addition, criminal proceedings were registered against officials, parents, and guardians.
Recall
Ruslan Kravchenko identified the protection of children's rights as one of the priorities of his work as Prosecutor General. He initiated control and personal support of charges by heads of regional prosecutor's offices in cases of crimes against children. Kravchenko insists that responsibility for serious crimes against children should be maximum – life imprisonment.
In addition, Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko initiated a large-scale and strict inspection of all children's institutions in Ukraine (orphanages, boarding schools, rehabilitation centers, family-type orphanages) due to discovered facts of violence, torture, and falsification of medical diagnoses.
