According to the energy distribution company LUMA Energy, about 87% of customers were left without electricity as of 13:00 on Tuesday.
The company said it would take 24 to 48 hours to fully restore power. Priority has been given to restoring power to critical facilities, including Centro Medico and the municipal hospital in the capital San Juan.
Chronic power outages remain a persistent problem for Puerto Rico due to its outdated infrastructure. The frequent power outages cause significant inconvenience to the island's residents, especially during holidays.
The power company is working hard to restore normal operation of the grid as soon as possible, but the situation underscores the need for deep reforms of Puerto Rico's energy infrastructure.
