A group of 35 monks and five laypeople were walking along a road in Mukdahan province during a pilgrimage when the incident occurred.
A video published online shows saffron robes and personal belongings scattered along the roadside, as well as a wrecked vehicle. According to police, five monks died at the scene, and three others were later hospitalized.
According to police, the boy took the pickup without permission, then lost control and crashed into the monks. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Police Major General Pairoj Thaiphutsa said the truck was sent for examination.
"We asked the child's parents to come in to determine who is responsible for the child's care and to continue the legal process," he said.
Mukdahan Hospital appealed for urgent blood donations to help the injured monks, some of whom are in critical condition.
