The German national team sensationally ended its performance at the 2026 World Cup, losing to Paraguay in a penalty shootout – 3:4. The regular and extra time of the match ended with a score of 1:1, reports UNN.

Paraguay took the lead in the 42nd minute thanks to a goal by Julio Enciso after an assist from Matías Galarza, and in the 55th minute, Kai Havertz equalized the score after an assist from Florian Wirtz.
However, in extra time, Germany was one step away from victory. In the 102nd minute, Jonathan Tah sent the ball into the net of Paraguay's goal, but after a video review (VAR), the referee disallowed the goal, calling a foul.
The fate of the ticket to the next round was decided by a penalty shootout.
With the first shot, Kai Havertz failed to beat the Paraguay goalkeeper. After that, the teams exchanged accurate shots, but Nick Woltemade also missed his attempt. Among the Paraguayans, Antonio Sanabria and Fabián Balbuena also missed, leaving Germany a chance to save themselves.
However, the decisive moment came with the sixth German shot – Jonathan Tah failed to score. After that, Juan Canale converted the decisive penalty, giving Paraguay a 4:3 victory in the shootout and a ticket to the next stage of the World Cup.
Germany's defeat has already become one of the main sensations of the tournament, as Julian Nagelsmann's team was considered one of the favorites of the world championship.
