Nadiya Leshchyk proposed to allow schools to retain students for the second year of study without parental consent. The proposal applies to cases of low academic performance and long absences.

Education Ombudsman Nadiya Leshchyk proposes to give schools the right to leave students for the second year due to poor performance or absenteeism. Leshchyk wrote about this on her Facebook page, UNN reports.

"Last week, Oksen Lisovyi, the minister of education and science of Ukraine, met. During the meeting, she raised key issues that participants in the educational process and educational managers address to us, and provided her suggestions for solving them," Leshchik said.

During the meeting, Leshchyk proposed to grant the right to educational institutions to leave students of all classes for the second year of study in the same class under one of the conditions: the presence of an initial level of educational achievements of the child, long skipping lessons, absence during one academic semester by the decision of the pedagogical council, without parental consent.

Also, according to her, they discussed the timeliness of allocating a subvention to support children with special educational needs in 2025; the possibility of allocating a monthly supplement for special working conditions for teachers of preschool and extracurricular education institutions; allocating subventions for shelter of educational institutions not only for front-line and border areas, but also for all regions, as well as for communities where access to preschool education is limited due to the lack of such shelters; allocating a subvention for nutrition of students of general secondary education institutions; prevention of conflicts of interest in the field of education and providing explanations on this issue.

"On many issues, we have reached a common vision for their solution. A separate issue in which we agreed to work closely is the work on restoring academic freedom and reducing the overload of teachers in educational institutions. The first step in this direction is to reduce the number of events for teachers and applicants for education and force them to participate in these events to compile so - called ratings of educational institutions in communities, regions and in Ukraine as a whole," Leshchyk said.

Recall

From 2027, Ukrainian schoolchildren will have access to a modern system of specialized education in high schools. The reform should change outdated approaches, improve its quality and provide students with more opportunities.
