China's Foreign Ministry has declared its readiness to work with the United States on the basis of mutual respect and cooperation.

China will continue to work with the United States on the basis of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said on Wednesday, shortly before Donald Trump announced his victory in the US presidential election, UNN reports citing Reuters.

"Our policy towards the United States is consistent," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference in Beijing when asked how Trump's return to the Oval Office would affect US-China relations.

"We will continue to consider and regulate relations between China and the United States in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation," she said.

Addendum

Chinese strategists expect more fierce rhetoric and potentially crippling tariffs from Trump, who has proposed imposing duties on Chinese imports of more than 60% and ending China's most favored nation status in trade.

China annually sells more than $400 billion worth of goods to the United States and hundreds of billions more in components for products that Americans buy in other countries.

Analysts say the prospect of a trade war has rattled China's leadership, which has relied heavily on exports to drive growth as consumers hold back spending in the ailing $19 trillion economy.
