Viagra Day and International Whiskey Day: What other holidays are celebrated on March 27
Kyiv • UNN
March 27 is Viagra Day, celebrating the approval of the drug, International Whiskey Day, founded in honor of Michael Jackson, and International Theater Day.

Today, March 27, is International Whiskey Day and Viagra Day, UNN reports.
Millions of men and even women can join in celebrating Viagra Day today. It was on March 27, 1998 that the Food and Drug Administration approved this drug, which revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In the early 90s, British scientists Peter Dunn and Albert Wood, commissioned by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, developed a drug for high blood pressure and angina.
However, the first tests revealed an unexpected side effect: increased erections in male volunteers.
Pfizer felt that this side effect could bring incredible profits, and therefore shifted the focus in testing and further development of the drug.
After entering the market, Viagra became the most popular drug, with annual sales exceeding $ 1 billion.
Viagra has long become a name in its own right, because, regardless of the brand, people quite often call all similar drugs for men Viagra.
International Whiskey Day
Today is also International Whiskey Day. The event is established in honor of the birthday of British journalist and writer Michael James Jackson, who was born on March 27, 1942, and wrote many articles and books about whiskey.
Jackson also developed the concept of whiskey tasting and a scale for assessing its quality.
Whiskey is a strong alcoholic beverage that is obtained from different types of grain (wheat, rye, corn, barley or buckwheat). There are about 5 thousand varieties of single malt whiskey alone. The most popular whiskeys are made by the Scots and Irish - from barley grain. The drink from corn is produced in the USA, from rye - in Canada. Whiskey is stored in closed barrels for at least three years.
During the celebration of International Whiskey Day, funds are being raised in many parts of the world for research into Parkinson's disease, which Jackson suffered from.
International Theatre Day
The event was initiated by the International Theatre Institute and the famous French theatre figure Jean Cocteau in 1961.
The date of the celebration was chosen in honor of the fact that, allegedly, it was on March 27 that the first theatrical performance took place in Ancient Rome. Although, this fact has not been proven by historians.
In addition, we should not forget that theatrical art appeared in Ancient Greece, where costumed performances were staged in honor of the god Dionysus. Over time, having gone through a long path of development, the theatre separated from the religious and folk orientation into an independent type of art.
Theatrical art in Ukraine dates back to ancient times, when it was manifested in folk games, dances, songs and rituals.
In the 8th-18th centuries, nativity scenes became widespread: traveling puppet theaters that performed Christmas dramas and social and everyday interludes.
The first stationary theater in the territory of modern Ukraine was opened in Lviv in the former Franciscan church in 1795.
Nephrologist Day
Nephrologists celebrate their professional holiday today.
Nephrology is a branch of medicine that studies the functions and diseases of the kidneys.
The first steps in the development of nephrology as a science took place at the beginning of the 19th century and were associated with the name of the British doctor Richard Bright. Nephrology was singled out as a separate clinical specialty only in the 1960s.
Today you can also join the Freedom of Documents Day and International Doodle Day.
Day of Memory of the Holy Martyr Matrona
According to the church calendar, today is the Day of Memory of the Holy Martyr Matrona, who lived in Greece in the 3rd-4th centuries.
The Christian Matrona was a slave of a pagan, the wife of a local military leader.
She constantly demanded that Matrona renounce her faith in God. Once the mistress found out that her slave had secretly gone to church. For this, she ordered Matrona to be severely beaten, starved her for three days, and then killed. Matrona's body was secretly taken by Christians and buried.
Matrona, Alexander, and Ivan celebrate their name days on March 27.
