The United States has begun the process of transferring $725 million to the UN. This amount will cover less than 20% of the organization's reported debt owed by Washington.

The Trump administration has begun the process of transferring $725 million to the United Nations. This follows from a congressional notification seen by Reuters, reports UNN.

Aid experts called the move a long-awaited step toward paying billions of dollars in arrears.
The media outlet notes that there have so far been no answers in Washington to questions about the reasons for the payment from an administration that has cut funding to many UN agencies and sharply criticized the global organization for failing to realize its potential.
The money mentioned in the State Department's August 4 letter to Congress, which was not published, is to be transferred before US President Donald Trump's expected address to the UN General Assembly in New York next month.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said this year that the UN faced an "imminent financial collapse" because of unpaid contributions from member states, and the global organization has introduced significant budget cuts.
The $725 million will amount to less than 20% of the more than $4 billion that the United States was supposed to pay the UN, according to the organization in May, although Washington claims that the total is much lower and that it has made some payments.
