Radiofrequency ablation: Shalimov Center talks about an effective method of combating tumors

Radiofrequency ablation of a tumor is a modern minimally invasive method of combating primary and secondary malignant neoplasms. Its essence lies in the introduction of electrodes into the affected area, which cause a local increase in temperature to 60-110°C, as a result of which the tumor "dies off". This was reported in the National Scientific Center for Surgery and Transplantation named after O.O. Shalimov, writes UNN.

The instrument is inserted into the site of injury under CT control, and each millimeter of electrode advancement is controlled by the surgeon so as not to touch healthy tissue. Experts insist that ablation is an absolutely safe method of combating neoplasms and can be used both in the fight against inoperable tumors and as an adjunct in the treatment after partial or complete removal of the affected organ.

Radiofrequency ablation can be used to combat tumors and their metastases in the liver, lungs, kidneys, adrenal glands, spleen, bones, soft tissues, abdominal cavity, retroperitoneal space, mediastinum.

"This method of treatment can be used repeatedly in case of new tumor foci or in case of continued growth of already treated formations. Complications during RFA are very rare and usually do not require additional manipulations," - emphasize the specialists of the Shalimov Center.

Specialists also listed indications and contraindications to radiofrequency ablation.

Indications for radiofrequency ablation (RFA):

  • relapse or metastasis of the tumor after surgery;
    • impossibility of removing the affected organ;
      • solitary metastases (up to 4-5 metastases. In some cases, the treatment method can be used for a larger number of tumors);
        • focus sizes of about 3-5 cm (in some cases, RFA can be performed for metastases of a larger diameter);
          • patient's refusal of surgical treatment.

            Contraindications to radiofrequency ablation:

            • spread of metastases throughout the body;
              • tumor damage to blood vessels, hollow organs, bile ducts, bronchi;
                • location of the tumor in close proximity to the main bile ducts, bronchi;
                  • blood clotting disorders that cannot be corrected with medication;
                    • presence of an artificial pacemaker.

                      The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, but with the accompaniment of an anesthesiological team that monitors the patient's general condition. In some cases, doctors may put the patient under anesthesia, if such a need arises. Specialists say that rehabilitation after such a procedure usually does not take more than two hours.
