The Mexican national team confidently defeated Ecuador 2-0 and advanced to the round of 16 of the World Cup. Mexico was much more active in attack, regularly threatening the opponent's goal and secured a comfortable advantage already in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Julián Quiñones opened the scoring after a pass from Roberto Alvarado, and in the 31st minute, Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead, taking advantage of an assist from Quiñones.
After the break, the Mexicans continued to control the flow of the game, while Ecuador only occasionally created dangerous moments and failed to restore the intrigue. The team calmly saw out the match to victory and secured a spot in the next round of the World Cup.
Already in stoppage time, Ecuador was reduced to ten men. In the 90+5th minute, Pervis Estupiñán received a straight red card for unsportsmanlike conduct. The defender covered his mouth with his hand and said something to a Mexican national team player. At the current World Cup, FIFA strictly punishes such actions, so the referee immediately sent the Ecuadorian off the field.
