Latvian Foreign Minister and candidate for NATO Secretary General Krišjanis Karinš emphasizes the need for a clear vision of Russia and consensus within the Alliance amid rising defense spending.
Latvian Foreign Minister Krishnanis Karinšs, who is running for NATO's top post, said the alliance needs a leader who can build consensus, is committed to increasing defense spending and has a clear vision of how to deal with Russia. This was reported by the AR, according to UNN.

He also said it was important not to panic, recognizing the "very real threat that Russia poses" and working together to contain it.
It is noted that due to Russia's war against Ukraine, the process of appointing a new secretary general has become highly politicized. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland have taken a strong stance in support of Ukraine, and because of this, it may be difficult for one of the leaders of these countries to get the position.
NATO is likely to appoint a new Secretary General at its next summit in Washington in July.
