Health Ministry: 158.8 thousand HIV cases registered in Ukraine, almost 10 thousand of them in 2023

In Ukraine, 158,803 cases of HIV infection and 48,908 cases of AIDS have been registered, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday, December 1, World HIV/AIDS Day, UNN reports.

As of November 1, 2023, 158,803 cases of HIV infection and 48,908 cases of AIDS were diagnosed in Ukraine, of which 9,769 cases of HIV and 2,738 cases of AIDS were registered in 2023. But in reality, the numbers may be higher. According to estimates, at the end of 2021, one in four people with HIV did not know their status

- the Ministry of Health reported.

Details

In 2022, 1,293 people died of AIDS, and in 2023 (as of November 1) - another 1,198. In total, AIDS claimed 630,000 lives last year, and more than 1 million people were infected with HIV worldwide.

As indicated, this year 121,820 Ukrainians are receiving ARV therapy, of whom 119,730 are adults and 1,990 are children. 7,500 of our fellow citizens with HIV are receiving ARV therapy in the EU countries.

The Ministry of Health reminds that during the first weeks, months or even years of HIV carriage, there are no symptoms. Meanwhile, the virus slowly occupies and destroys the human immune system, and the latter transmits the virus further. If a person does not detect the virus in time and start treatment, he or she will develop AIDS, an irreversible condition where the immune system is so weakened that it cannot fight off the simplest infections, and one of them will eventually kill the person.

Recall

Since 1988, on the initiative of the WHO, December 1 has been marked as World AIDS Day, a disease that has since claimed the lives of more than 30 million people around the world.
