Details
The hearings in a high-security courtroom in Stuttgart will mark the beginning of three trials of 27 people suspected of a plot foiled by authorities in late 2022. Together, they represent one of the largest trials in German history.
On Monday, the court is considering the case of nine suspects, members of the Citizens of the Reich group, who allegedly intended to introduce strict military laws in Germany after the coup.
In 2016, the Internal Intelligence Service placed under surveillance the Reichsbürgers, who, according to its data, number about 21,000 and do not recognize modern Germany as a legitimate state.
The political leadership of the group on trial, led by real estate investor Henry XIII Prince Royce, a descendant of the now-absentee dynasty, will stand trial in Frankfurt next month, and another group of suspects will stand trial in Munich in June.
Prosecutors argue that the suspects' careful planning and stockpiles of firearms and cash indicate that they posed a real danger.
