France has set the date for the presidential election

French voters will go to the polls to elect a new president on April 18 and May 2 next year, two government officials who were allowed to remain anonymous because the decision has not yet been officially announced said. This is reported by Politeka, writes UNN.

The election details, first published by the local newspaper Ouest France, are expected to be officially announced after a government meeting on Wednesday morning.

Given the legal and constitutional constraints on the dates of French presidential elections, the only other possible dates were April 11 and 25. However, the chosen dates mean the election will take place closer to May 13, when Emmanuel Macron's second term ends.

Since Macron is constitutionally barred from running for a third consecutive term, a large number of candidates are already vying for his position. Among them are two of his former prime ministers, Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal, as well as radical left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The favorite will be the candidate from the National Rally party. At the same time, the far-right has not yet decided whether to nominate long-time leader Marine Le Pen or new-generation candidate Jordan Bardella, as this depends on a court decision regarding her appeal in a case of EU fund embezzlement and a ban on holding public office.
