The European Commission is calling on Europeans to have a three-day supply of food and water in case of war, cyberattacks or floods. The plan includes strengthening readiness for cyber threats and cooperation between sectors.

The European Commission recommends that all citizens of the European Union have food and water supplies for at least 72 hours in case of a crisis. Europeans are advised to be prepared for a possible war, a large-scale cyber attack, an epidemic or a flood, UNN writes with reference to Politico.

According to the Union Readiness Strategy plan, every EU citizen should stock up on enough food to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in the event of a crisis.

"In the event of extreme disruptions, the initial period is the most critical," the document states.

This plan includes a number of different scenarios. In particular, the possibility of war, cyberattacks, epidemics and floods caused by climate change is being considered.

None of the major crises of recent years have been isolated or short-lived

- the authors of the document reminded.

According to the 17-page draft, the strategy should "create a safe and resilient EU with the capabilities needed to anticipate and manage threats and dangers, regardless of their nature or origin".

This approach involves providing guidance to member states on "stockpiling essential supplies, crisis planning, providing shelter, and taking measures to ensure the availability of critical land and space".

The preparedness plan states that it is "urgent for the EU and its countries to strengthen preparedness in all sectors". According to the authors, Europe should primarily be better prepared for cyberattacks. They also noted that since the beginning of Russia's war against Ukraine, the aggressor state has been increasing its activity in cyberspace, including targeting critical EU infrastructure, such as energy networks.

The EU should promote cooperation between public and private organisations in strategic sectors such as cybersecurity, ensuring coherence between workforce needs and educational provision

- the project says.
