Ottavia Piana is a very experienced Italian caver. On Saturday, she and eight other people were exploring the deep caves of Bueno Fontenot, northeast of the city of Bergamo.
But then an incident occurred, Ottavia Piana slipped and fell about five meters, injuring her lower limbs, chest and face. Other cavers immediately raised the alarm: rescuers from the National Alpine and Caving Rescue Team (CNSAS) went to the cave and managed to reach the site on Sunday evening.
According to daily reports, the cave is located in an unexplored area, about four hours' walk from the surface.
As of now, emergency services have not yet been able to evacuate her.
The emergency services are preparing "explosive micro-charges to clear the way".
Ironically, this is not the first time a young woman has been stuck in the same cave: she already fell in July 2023.
According to the Alpine and Caving Rescue Service, it will take caver Ottavia Piana 36-48 hours to leave the Abisso Bueno Fontenot cave, whose medical staff is constantly monitoring the injured woman's condition, which is stable. Communication outside and inside the cave is provided by a telephone cable that rescuers have laid along the entire route of the rescue operation
