UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the United Kingdom is allocating nearly £290 million to support Ukraine in the areas of energy infrastructure and anti-corruption efforts.
"The United Kingdom stands firmly with Ukraine not only in its fight for freedom today, but also in ensuring its strength for rebuilding in the future – this is important for the long-term deterrence of Russian aggression," she said.
The British Foreign Secretary's statement came ahead of the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Poland, which begins today in Gdańsk.
"Ukraine needs long-term support both to overcome the conflict and to rebuild in the future," she said.
"That is why at this year's Ukraine Recovery Conference we are announcing a multi-million-pound aid package to power Ukraine's homes and critical infrastructure, support its businesses, and help improve education and justice," Cooper said.
Aid is also expected from the EU.
As Euronews notes, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who is already in Gdańsk, is expected to announce the transfer to Ukraine of the first tranche under the €90 billion loan package agreed by EU leaders in December, the implementation of which was significantly delayed due to Hungary's veto.
The first €3.2 billion is expected to help Ukraine cover its financial and budgetary needs. A second payment of €5 billion, intended for drone production, is planned to be announced by the end of the month, Euronews reports.
In addition, at the "energy Ramstein" on the sidelines of the conference, new aid to Ukraine worth hundreds of millions was also announced.
Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Development Oleksiy Kuleba stated that Ukraine expects to sign over 30 agreements worth more than €1.5 billion at the conference; they are expected to include projects in housing, infrastructure, and regional recovery. Ukraine's Ministry of Development is expected to present over 530 investment projects from communities and regions in Gdańsk.
Among the high-ranking foreign guests expected are German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
